People enjoying the spring sunshine in Gordon Square - April 2024 |
Gordon Square is one of London's best in the spring. This garden square in Bloomsbury, twin of nearby Tavistock Square, has a less formal layout, making it feel like you're more out there in nature, and is rich in spring blooms - it's the time of the year for this. Earlier, in March, there are crocuses and daffodils, and then in April the bluebells arrive.
There are a few good places for bluebells in London - I think the best one is Chalet Wood in Wanstead Park, which is the most like a proper bluebell wood, with English bluebells, and has a real magical feel about it. And it is still in London; you don't need to leave. But Gordon Square has the best bluebells in the heart of London (and I'll ignore that these are the hybrid ones).
On one of the first warm spring day, bluebells and people are out enjoying the sunshine. There's a little garden hut with a cafe (Momo's Garden Cafe, delicious veggie food) in the south-side of the square - what's not to love here. I'll spend time again in Gordon Square in the spring.
